Why didn’t my students receive a notification email for my announcement?

There are numerous reasons why a student did not receive a notification email:

  • Opting out of notifications

The default notification setting for Announcements and Conversation Messages is Notify me right away. However, students can adjust the frequency of notification emails, including Do not send me anything. We recommend telling students to leave these notifications on Notify me right away in their personal settings.

  • Delays due to high traffic

Canvas can experience delays in sending notifications when there are extremely large message queues. For time-sensitive messages, we recommend emailing students directly.

  • Emails in Spam or Clutter folders

It is possible that the notification emails end up in a student’s spam folder. 

  •  Course is unpublished

Announcements posted before a course is published do not generate notifications. No notification types are sent for unpublished courses.
